Grand Theft Auto was the first game in what has become one of the most famous and controversial games series' in the world. Unlike its PlayStation 2 successors, the first Grand Theft Auto games (including Grand Theft Auto 2 and Grand Theft Auto: London 1969), the games were played from a top-down perspective, and although the majority of the world was rendered in 3-dimensions, the gameplay, characters, vehicles and props (weapons, crates, etc) were strictly 2-dimensional - which even back in the time of its initial release was considered quite poor. Whilst people laughed at first, they soon came to realise that the gameplay elements heavily outweighed the disappointment in terms of graphics, and had fans across the world addicted.
Pick a Person

Before you get down to the action, choose to play as one of four characters. It is the only way to keep track of your score.

How to Play

Your life of crime begins on foot in Liberty City, in an Area Called South Park. For your convenience, a clean car is provided. There's more to GTA life than stealing cars, driving over innocent pedestrians, shooting cops and evading the long arm of the law. But, not much more... Carry out jobs for the Mob to speed your rise from lowly junior joyrider to a member of the largest, most powerful family in the city.
