Grand Theft Auto III era
(Redirected from GTA III era)
The Grand Theft Auto III era is a term given to 6 games in the Grand Theft Auto series that were similar in gameplay, such as the HUD, graphics and characters seen in-game. Grand Theft Auto I and II are not part of the list because of the inferior graphics, being only in the top-down perspective and characters that do not appear in the Grand Theft Auto III era, Claude being debatable whether he is the protagonist of GTA II or if it's a similar person. Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars are also not on the list because none of the characters return, besides Lazlow (the GTA III era protagonists hinted to be dead) and in Grand Theft Auto IVs case, superior graphics to the Grand Theft Auto III era games. The Grand Theft Auto III era consists of six games:
Grand Theft Auto III was first released in 2001 and is the first game in the Grand Theft Auto III era. The game is set in Liberty City and is also set in the same year it was released. Grand Theft Auto III is also the first Grand Theft Auto game to be made in 3D. The game gained controversy due to the player's ability to pick up prostitutes, general killing in the game and court cases due to people killing others and blaming the game, in particular lawyer Jack Tompson.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was first released in 2002. It's the second game in the Grand Theft Auto III era. The game, as the name suggests, is set in Vice City in the year 1986. This game, like its predecessor, gained controversy because lawyer Jack Thompson had again blamed the game(s) to killings. Vice City was subject to controversy around a year later because a Haitain group was angered by their negative portrayal in the game as a gang antagonist to Tommy Vercetti.
Grand Theft Auto Advance was released around the same time as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in 2004. It's the first game in the Grand Theft Auto III era to be handheld, being exclusivly released for the Gameboy Advance. It was released to minimal controversy. The game is the first Liberty City related prequel to Grand Theft Auto III, the second prequel being Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories. Grand Theft Auto Advance is set again in Liberty City but a year earlier, in 2000.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was first released in 2004. According to most gaming websites, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the most popular Grand Theft Auto game, rivalled with Grand Theft Auto IV. The game is set in 1992 in the state of San Andreas. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the last GTA III era game to be released on Xbox and PC. After release, a mod was discovered on the PS2 and PC version of the game called the 'Hot Coffee' mod, a minigame of protagonist Carl Johnson having sex with a girlfriend. Rockstar said that the mini-game was never intended to be used. San Andreas was also well known to have several myths, such as killer ghost cars, Bigfoot and Leatherface. Most of them have been debunked, besides Ghost cars, with the logical explanation of the cars spawning on a hill and rolling down. Ghost Cars killing CJ are a mod.
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories was first released in October 2005 for the PSP and June 2006 for the PS2. It is the first game to be released on the PSP and is also the first Playstation exclusive Grand Theft Auto game. Liberty City Stories is the second Grand Theft Auto III era game to be released on a handheld device, this time the PSP, although it was later released on the Playstation 2. The game is set in Liberty City again and in the year 1998, serving as a prequel to Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto Advance. The game received little controversy compared to the other games.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories is the last game in the Grand Theft Auto III era. It was first released in October 2006 for the PSP and on March 2007 for the PS2. The game is set again in Vice City, in the year 1984, 2 years before the original Vice City. Vice City Stories serves as a prequel to Vice City, focusing on Lance Vance's brother, Vic Vance. Like the previous Grand Theft Auto III era handheld games, Vice City Stories gained limited controversy.
