Dimitri is introduced to Niko Bellic during the mission "Crime and Punishment". Dimitri is a member of the Russian mob who uses Niko to run errands for him and his boss Mikhail Faustin. There is apparently tension between Dimitri and Faustin (due to Faustin's anger control issues and drug use) which plays a fair part in the story.

Dimitri is eventually forced to ask Niko to kill Faustin (Faustin's anger issues led him to give orders to Niko that puts them all in danger). After Niko does this, Dimitri betrays Niko because he believes he could never survive by aligning himself with someone as powerless as Niko. Dimitri acts as the primary antagonist of the game and makes more moves against Niko, such as kidnapping Roman Bellic, and blackmailing Bernie Crane.

Dimitri's death depends on actions taken by the player. If the player chooses the "revenge" option during the final mission, Niko will ambush Dimitri on a boat and kill him. If the player chooses the "deal" option, Niko will be once again be betrayed by Dimitri, and will eventually chase him down for a final showdown at the Statue of Happiness in the final mission, "A Revenger's Tragedy."
