The Main Character of San Andreas who is your playable character, CJ after spending 5 years in Liberty City working as a car thief and estranged from his family because of the death of his little brother five years earlier, CJ comes back to San Andreas to pay respect to his Mother who was murdered. He reunites with his family but he doesn't really want to be sucked back into the gang life. Carl is forced to work for corrupt officers Frank Tenpenny, Eddie Pulaski and Jimmy Hernandez in order to protect his family. Tensions are high between Carl and his family from the beginning of the game, especially with Sweet. By the game's ending, however, the tensions are seemingly healed.
 Character Advancements
Unlike in Grand Theft Auto 3 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City you have the option to customize your character. You can select from a variety of looks for CJ. You can buy clothes, haircuts and even tattoos. As you progress through the storyline, you will have the opportunity to train CJ in a couple of fighting styles - each style better than the last one. These styles are: Boxing (in Los Santos), Tae Kwon Do (in San Fierro) and Muay Thai (in Las Venturas). Each style can have its advantages and can help you greatly in hand-to-hand combat. You can increase your driving skills by driving more; you can increase your flying skills by flying more and you can increase your swimming skills by swimming more. Simply put, if you want to get better at it, do it more often.Carl can have girlfriends, have date with them and visiting them, the more you have date with them the more they love you, and gave you gifts like their car key, Carl also can give them gifts like flowers.
Unlike other GTA games, Carl can answer people talking to him in street positive or negative.
- Carl's siblings consist of: Sean "Sweet" Johnson, the oldest of the Johnson male siblings and the leader of the family gang "Grove Street Families"; Kendl Johnson, the only woman sibling; Brian Johnson, a member of the Johnson family who was murdered before the game. His death prompted Carl to leave San Andreas, as Sweet blamed Carl for his death.
